To: Prospective Graduate Students

From: John Anderson

In a typical year, I accept one new graduate student with interests related to my specialities. Other faculty associated with the Seismological Laboratory or other fields in geophysics may accept additional students. If accepted, students are often offered a position of research assistant or possibly teaching assistant, with a salary that should cover most school and living expenses.

Students do not need to major in Earth Science at the undergraduate level to be accepted into the graduate school in Geophysics. The ideal student will have a strong background in math and physics, in addition to classes in Earth sciences. The most important Earth science classes beyond the introductory level are classes in Structural Geology, Plate Tectonics, and Geophysics. In math, I review applications for the following useful classes: Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Real, Complex, and Functional Analysis, Numerical Methods, and Probability and Statistics. In physics, I review applications for classes beyond an introductory college physics sequence, with classes in Mechanics, Mathematical Methods for Physicists, and Electricity and Magnetism being especially useful. I also look for a proven ability to program computers. We recognize that it is unlikely for any students to have taken all of these classes at the undergraduate level, and some of those in the list above are duplicative, so just because you are missing some of these you should not be discouraged from considering our program.

To obtain an application package, please send an email request to Ingrid Ramos (ramos@mines.unr.edu). If you are interested, please also contact me directly.
